Character: Grier Talbot (Human/Feline Shifter)
Source: "Caught Off Guard" (Midnight Town)
Word Count: 360

Starting at roughly $25 a month for basic coverage pet insurance, according to Grier Talbot, was a luxury. While he did pay for his own health insurance and still have enough for rent and other necessities, he often took advantage of his cat’s coverage plan for its cheaper cost. Back at home, he had only done this sort of thing once and it had been due to the event of their family doctor passing away. Never in his life did he think that he would return to the veterinarian on this type of occasion.

Lying down on the street, a seemingly misplaced gray cat with a loose orange collar struggled to maintain consciousness. In the few seconds before Grier decided to cross the street, he thought the crosswalk would be unoccupied in the time it took for him to dash across to the other street corner. He had been mistaken and had almost immediately placed the blame on the person who parallel-parked their Mustang right before the traffic light; in fact, he also placed the blame on his impulsiveness and the hour of the day. Everywhere around him as cars on each of the three other streets were just starting to turn on their lights in anticipation of sunset. His narrowed brown eyes blinked slowly. Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid! He should have shifted. Why in the hell did he think that four paws would be faster than a pair of long legs and Converse sneakers?

A pitiful meow escaped his throat as memories and musings crossed the forefront of his mind. If he survived, would he go home with someone as a foster pet? Would the vet’s office call his little apartment and expect that a “Mr. Talbot” would come and claim him? Would the person or people who didn’t see him cross the street help? As much as he could figure, he felt he was just winded and possibly suffering from a concussion; at the worst, he was probably expecting bruised and broken ribs or a fractured arm or a collapsed lung. Trembling, he tried to open his eyes, straining his hopeful ears for the sound of someone approaching.

Character: Borden Lyall (wolf)
Source: "Calling Card" (Ruins of Wildwood)
Word Count: 393

Ambling down the graveled trails, the scent of freshly caught prey reached his nose. Borden raised a brow, following the intoxicating aroma until he spotted a peculiar sight. Rather than what he had expected to see – a pack member enjoying lunch or Alexander bringing a generous meal to his new-found beloved – his eyes fell upon the bodies of a rabbit, a squirrel, and a fish which had become frosted by the time he found it. He instinctively set his nose to the shelf, practically dragging it along the cold, rough surface and testing the path for any peculiar fragrance. Who had left these here? Were these ‘gifts’ for him?

Cautiously, he padded forward, unable to sift through the heavy musk that was his own. He turned around and lowered his head to the path that led down the mountain side. Aha… He inhaled deeply, trying to work out the perfume. It was vaguely familiar, even after it was drowned by the scent of water. Hmm. He was just about ready to sit down and have a little bite to eat when he saw her - a flash of white dashing across the river and into the Wildwood.

Edging toward the shelf, he watched the way she walked; he wanted to be sure to study her gait for a bit before he did anything else. There was little doubt in his mind though that the wolf in question was the new Alpha female, Jayse, Hope, or Adonia. The way she held herself, her spunk and her build, distinctly set her apart from the others. Vlarindara. ”Hey, waiiiiit!” he called out to her in something between a bark and a howl. ”Vlar!”

Snatching up the rabbit, he dashed down the frosty boulders. He could have easily tumbled all the way down, but within a matter of scaling the narrow paths and hopping from boulder to boulder, he raced to the river’s edge, hoping she had heard him. Scanning the tree line, he eyed the edges of the forest as he wagged his brush-like tail. The rabbit fell to the space in front of his forepaws; he wanted to pronounce her name right in case she heard it through the dense woodlands, ”Vlarindara?!” It had been a while since he had last seen her, and frankly, he hoped his eyes and nose were not leading him astray.

Character: Chase Gardinier
Source: E-Mail Starter (written Aug 24 2013)
Word Count: 693

The flight from Napa Valley, California to Las Vegas, Nevada was not a long one at a little over an hour, but everything leading up to Chase Gardinier's flight and arrival had him exhausted. Not to mention that his commercial airline had come into LAS at 8:30 AM. His parents, who had moved to Sin City after he had graduated college, had been anxious for this day; and, the siblings who had stayed in California or gone to college out of state, had traveled earlier in the week. He was the last to arrive.

A flight stewardess had given him a gentle nudge to the shoulder to wake him up and within moments he was standing sleepily in the baggage claim in a business suit with his tie undone. A buzzer and a spinning red light called his attention to the spinning carousel to his right, and everywhere around him people crowded in around him. While he had been the first to find the perfect place to stand alongside the river of suitcases, he was practically the last person standing when the majority of the luggage had been claimed.

Chase was seconds away from deciding to report his missing possessions when his gray garment bag and ruby red rolling suitcase came into view out of the corner of his eye. Pulling up the handle and tucking his folded over suits under an arm, he headed out into the warm morning air, his blue eyes scanning up and down the taxi queue and various vehicles for a black shuttle that bore the name of a casino - the successful titan that was his family's legacy... and, soon enough, his responsibility. Tonight, there was to be a gala to mark his first hours as the new CEO and he was, to put it simply, everything but wholly prepared.

While his second-youngest sister had expressed interest in helping run the "family business" in her youth, their parents had often told her to finish college while waiting for the right time to allow her full reign on a portion of the 215 acre, 45-floor hotel and resort. The eldest sister, 24-year-old Sadie, was married just last year and still lived in the Valley with a dream to start their own family; Chase supposed that both she and her husband would be there to applaud him tonight. As for his youngest sister, the baby of the family at 19 and Chase's favorite, he couldn't blame her for not attending, but he knew for a fact she would seize any opportunity to pull herself away from her studies. Knocking on the window of the tinted van, he gave a weary smile to the man inside who unlocked the door for him. Once his luggage was secured in the back and his garment bag was laid out over the unoccupied middle seat, they were off with the air conditioning on high blast.

Arriving on the premises was nothing eventful and once the Gardinier heir had set his things down in one of the executive suites sometime around 11 AM, he collapsed on the bed with a tired sigh. Tonight would be a very busy one.

Hours later, woken up by the hunger pangs in his stomach, Chase rolled over and sat up to greet the darkening skyline above the Las Vegas Strip. It was nearly "show time." Messages on his worn iPhone, which had been placed on top of his garment bag on one end of the bed, alerted him that he had missed a call from each of his immediate family. He ran a hand down his face and through his blonde, toussled hair before finally standing up and stretching in his now wrinkled suit. A hot shower would do him wonders right about now... The nerves from earlier that morning might have subsided but now he had to steel himself for the pressure that was starting to build just hours before they would start allowing his guests into the convention room where friends, family, and long-standing employees were all ready for a night of festivities to celebrate his father's retirement and his designation as chief executive officer.
